The Prince of Wales hears about malware at Queen's University Belfast

The Prince of Wales began a three-day visit to Northern Ireland and Ireland today in the city of Belfast.

His Royal Highness toured the Institute of Electronics, Communications and Information Technology (ECIT) at Queen’s University Belfast.

The Institute was established in 2003 and carries out research which has produced technologies such as anti-counterfeit devices to prevent theft and fraud as well as major advances to weather satellite technology to give more accurate weather forecasts and a better understanding of climate change. During the visit, The Prince met staff and watched a demonstration of the weather satellite technology being researched at the University.

While touring ECIT, The Prince also visited The Centre for Secure Information Technologies, which was established as part of the Institute in 2009. The Prince was shown a demonstration in the Network Security Laboratory on how malware software can damage a computer system, and ways in which this can be prevented.

His Royal Highness presented a Queen’s Anniversary Prize to The Centre for Secure Information Technologies earlier this year at Buckingham Palace. It is the UK’s largest academic research centre and has been designated an ‘Academic Centre for Excellence for Cyber Security’ by GCHQ.

The Vice-Chancellor of Queen's University Belfast, Professor Patrick Johnston, said:

"This centre is working on the digital society of the future protecting us from cyber security attacks but also about how we develop technologies which we will use as human beings and societies going forward - in health, banking, engineering and indeed in communication.

"It is great to have that recognition from Prince Charles of the importance of the work that we do here."

Before leaving, The Prince officially opened the university's first Global Research Institute and unveiled a plaque to commemorate the visit. Tomorrow, The Duchess of Cornwall will join His Royal Highness for day two of the #RoyalVisitNI.
